December 2010 Edition -- The Perfect Gift
Christmas Tree

At the risk of sounding like an endless commercial, we can't say it enough -- books make the perfect gift. No matter your interests, someone, somewhere has written a book about it. Does your eleven-year-old nephew want to know how to survive on a planet inhabited by 10-foot-tall blue people? No problem. Or maybe your father loves a good suspense novel, but is always too busy to read? There's always the audio version to amp up his bleary-eyed work commute.

In our holiday issue, agent Elaine Spencer shares her gift buying tactics, as well as a break down of what percentage authors actually earn from each sale. Her article is a great reminder that we must continue to support our favorite authors so that we are able to read material from them for years to come. Also, this month, we have tips from our TKA authors about top gifts for the writers and book lovers in your life.

For our December chat, we're going back to our annual holiday lunchbox format. It takes place tomorrow, Thursday December 16th @ 12:30pm ET. Fifteen authors have donated signed books, and we're throwing in some titles from our book closet, as well as a giant holiday stocking overflowing with books and special treats. TKA Santa will be giving out the goodies, and he's not the type to keep track of who's been naughty and who's been nice. So everyone is off the hook. This event is definitely our most fun, informal chat of the year -- so don't miss it!

We want to send out a special congrats to Nalini Singh whose ninth Psy-Changeling novel, PLAY OF PASSION, premiered on the New York Times bestseller list in the #9 spot. What an excellent way to close out an amazing year that included NYT hits for not only Nalini, but also Gena Showalter, Rachel Caine, Christie Golden, Marjorie M. Liu, Rob Thurman, and Don Piper and Cecil Murphey. We're so proud of the work that all of our authors have done this year, and look forward to an even more successful 2011. We wish you and yours a safe and wonderful holiday.

The Knight Post -- Top Holiday Gift Picks from TKA Authors

Struggling to find a gift for the book lovers in your life who have everything? Our authors put their heads together and came up with a list of items that will make them smile.

Author Headshots

Left to right: Keith R.A. DeCandido, Linda Gerber, Shannon K. Butcher, Maria Geraci, Faith Hunter, Chris Marie Green and Louisa Edwards

Keith R.A. DeCandido, author of SUPERNATURAL: HEART OF THE DRAGON

FOR WRITERS: Most every writer has a beverage of choice while writing. For some it's coffee or tea, others it's beer or Scotch. (For me, it's herbal iced tea.) A great gift would be a supply of that beverage: coffee beans, tea bags, the Beer-of-the-Month club, a bottle, or a gift card to the local cafe.

FOR READERS: A gift certificate to a bookstore. It can be a chain, or Amazon.com, or to an independent bookstore. After all, one of the great joys of reading is browsing, and often the book that brings the most joy is the one you find yourself. The gift card can enable that joy while still providing a gift that will be remembered fondly.

Linda Gerber, author of TRANCE

Coffee Gift Set

FOR WRITERS: Time! I'm looking at this from the perspective of a mom writer, but the one thing all of us seem short on is time to write without worrying about everything else that has to get done. Offer to babysit or make a meal or just be reeeaaally understanding when your writing friend needs some quiet time - alone with her characters.

Shannon K. Butcher, author of LIVING NIGHTMARE

FOR READERS: Curling up on the couch with a hot drink and a good book is every reader’s happy place, so my suggestions for the readers in your life are a snuggly, soft throw, their favorite coffee or tea, or, if their eyes are like mine, a nice lamp that simulates daylight.

Maria Geraci, THE BOYFRIEND OF THE MONTH CLUB

FOR WRITERS: What is one of the best gifts for writers this year? I'd love one of those one cup coffee makers. There's plenty of times when writing that I think, "I could just keep going if only I had some coffee!" But I hate to brew half a pot for just one cup.

FOR READERS: What is one of the best gifts to buy for readers this year? Definitely an electronic reader. I received a Kindle for my birthday last year and it changed my life! I still buy print books, but I buy more books total now that I have more options.

Faith Hunter, author of MERCY BLADE
FOR WRITERS: Actually, because I’m a Leo, one is never enough, so I have two ideas! First, a book for the writer in your life: the writer who hasn’t found a publisher, or the writer who is stressed out promo, or is hitting the wall on deadlines, or feels like she’ll never be published again… A book for the planning times, the hoping times, or the dark times in a writer’s life. My suggestion is the book called HOW TO WRITE MAGICAL WORDS, A WRITER'S COMPANION.

Second (for the folk in the northern hemisphere), because this winter is so cold, I

Kindle

recommend something warm: a small, lightweight, fleece blanket, about 5 feet square; warm fuzzy socks; a special batch of teas or coffees to start off those cold mornings at the computer.

Chris Marie Green, author of THE PATH OF RAZORS

FOR WRITERS: What is one of the best gifts for writers this year? The iPad. I know it's not a dedicated reader, but I would love to use it for research on the go!

FOR READERS: I'm addicted to the New Yorker magazine, so I'd say a subscription would be perfect for readers. Its articles really open up the world, and I've learned so much from it!

Louisa Edwards, author of JUST ONE TASTE

FOR WRITERS: One of the coolest gifts I've seen anywhere is the Foodzie Tasting Box, a handpicked assortment of fabulous, artisanal food products, like Skillet Bacon Jam and Cabernet Brownies, that changes from month to month. You can gift a 3, 6, or 12 month subscription, and your lucky writer friend will never have to worry about having delicious snacks in the house to keep her going all the way to the deadline! I know, I sound like an ad for Foodzie, but sadly, I get no endorsement money for this. I just really want someone to give it to me!

FOR READERS: For readers (like me) who read cookbooks as if they were novels, here's my current favorite, by a world-renowned (and very sexy!) chef with a fascinating story to tell: A RETURN TO COOKING by Eric Ripert and Michael Ruhlmann. It's part memoir, part food porn photography, part cookbook--and all wonderful!

Elaine Spencer Headshot

The Gift that Keeps on Giving

About a month and a half ago I noticed on the top of the eBay header their countdown to Christmas. At the time it read 50+ days and really marked the beginning of my holiday excitement. An avid eBayer (bet you didn’t know that about me!) I squealed in delight knowing I now had a place where I could count down to the holiday as I began making my shopping and gift giving plans.

This calendar was the beginning of the 2010 shopping season for me, before my inbox was bombarded with month-long black Friday ads and more cheap TVs than I can possibly find recipients for. While a few high dollar electronics have made it under my tree, for the bulk of my gift giving needs, as always, I found myself heading to the bookstore. I realize I’m preaching to the choir, but books always make the best gifts, and there is seldom a recipient that I can’t find a perfect book for. I use the holidays as an excuse to further support my business and remind everyone else why books are so great! I buy cookbooks, gift books, game books, local interest books, self-help books, commercial best-sellers, and of course those authors that I’ve discovered throughout the year that I’m dying to share with my friends and family.

Giving books is a gift that gives back, literally, by putting money into my clients’ pockets! Every book that’s sold means money that we can hope to show up on our next royalty statement. So, the question begs to be asked, for every one of those books being sold, how much are the authors actually taking home per copy? For this articles sake I’m going to keep it pretty simple, there are of course hundreds of factors that will cause these figures to vary slightly. This is a large part of what we agents do, we try to negotiate the best imaginable terms to make these royalties as high as possible, but for convenience sake, we can draw from a pretty standard set of numbers to give you a basic idea.

So who are you shopping for this holiday season? Is it Great Aunt Beth who is a die-hard romance fan, devouring the latest paperback releases with fervor comparable to Santa’s love for a good chocolate chip cookie? If so let’s work with the basic royalty model based on a book’s cover price (as opposed to the other popular model of calculating off of a publisher’s net receipts). If Beth’s favorite book has a cover price of $7.99, and the author’s contract says that they’ll receive 8% (again, pretty standard) on the first 100,000 copies sold, that means for every book sold the author is earning $0.64. Once they’ve sold 100k copies, the royalty rate might increase, in what we call an escalation, to 10%, meaning they’re now taking home approx. $0.79 per book. Now of course, let us not forget the author has to earn back their opening advance before any of this money actually gets sent to them. Imagine the author is a

Gifts

standard midlist author making an advance of $25k per book. This means that the author would have to sell approximately 40k copies (at the opening 8% royalty rate) before they’ve earned back their advance, and start actually making additional money based on each copy sold.

Dollar Bill

Moving down the gift list; say you plan on buying your brother-in-law the newest John Grisham release, currently with a cover price of $28.95. Since it’s a hard cover, with a more expensive jacket price, the author also typically receives a higher royalty rate (and my guess, since its Grisham, an industry powerhouse, I bet his agents negotiated a higher than standard rate as well). However, since I’m not privy to those negotiations, for this discussion, he’s making 10% to the first 5,000 copies sold, 12.5% for the next 5,000 sold and 15% on all copies thereafter. Doing the math, this means he’s making about $2.90 for each book of the first 5,000 copies sold, $3.62 on the next 5,000 and $4.34 on all copies thereafter.

Again, this is an incredibly limited view of this topic, and doesn’t even broach the topic of eBooks. The 2010 holiday season is really marking the arrival of the eReader as a major must have tech gadget as readers everywhere are being wooed to convert to the electronic reader with retail prices being offered at incredible bargains. It’s been predicted by analysts

that December 26th will bring in the biggest single to-date revenues for eBook sales. While I hadn’t originally thought about it, it makes perfect sense. On Christmas day you unwrap your new reader and then the next day you start building your digital library. This is great news for authors with releases late in December and early in January. But how much are the authors making on those much cheaper eBook sales? Welcome to the topic of the year. In the most black and white, elementary analysis, you can guess that an average author from a major publisher is making approximately 25% of the publisher’s NET sales receipts, (price received after discounts, taxes, and processing fees). So for the bestselling hardcover titles whose eBook versions are retailing at $9.99, the author is making about $2.00 per book. And for the mass market bestsellers, with eBook versions going for around $2.50, authors are taking home approximately $0.50 per book after all net deductions have come out.

While this information isn’t new, nor is it exhaustive, hopefully it gives you something to think about as you’re standing in those long holiday lines waiting to check out (at your local bookstore of course!) It’s a complicated pie with lots of hands reaching for a piece, and at the end of the day it’s crazy to think just how much of your spending dollar is ending up in the author’s pocket. Regardless, in these tough times, every little bit counts, and I’m pretty certain that at the top of every author’s wish list is a desire to see people at the stores holding *their* books, ready to be wrapped up and placed under the tree.

Roundtable
Roundtable

QUESTION: What is your reaction to the recent buzz about Borders possibly making a bid to merge with Barnes & Noble?

Nephele Tempest : I think it’s sad to think the market cannot support two major bookstore chains, and I think it would be a loss to see them united, simply because they have very different cultures and I shop at each for different things. That said, we can only wait and see, and I suppose a merger would be better than both stores floundering and going under.

Elaine Spencer: Generally speaking I think this would be a terrible loss to the reading community. I am a dedicated shopper at both Barnes and Noble and Borders (and Books A Million, and Target, and Wal-Mart and Amazon and, well you get the point). I stay loyal to both because they

offer me entirely different experiences. In the end I get the same rush walking out the door (or opening my mailbox) when I have a new bulging stack of titles, but I get there through different outlets. The displays, the store layouts, the features, they vary significantly from establishment to establishment, and as such, I know I'm going to be drawn to different things depending on where I'm at. A merger would mean *my* book shopping options would be limited, and more importantly the book buying experiences available to me would be limited, and as a direct result I know the titles I am going to be drawn to are also going to be limited, without my own initiative to search harder at the remaining venues. This makes my heart sad. And on a professional level, it would be bad for the entire economy of authors and readers alike - every day we hear how bad the mega stores are, this would only amplify those negative sentiments.

The Watercooler

Watercooler

Each month, we list what our agents are currently looking for and/or a particular type of book they've heard editors are asking to see. The watercooler items will be adjusted as agents receive new information or develop new interests. Therefore, some items may be repeated from the previous month's watercooler item if interests have not changed.

Also, pleased be advised that this is not a complete listing of the types of books TKA will represent. For a listing of the types of titles we rep, please visit www.KnightAgency.net.

Nephele Tempest: I’m looking for great young adult—particularly something set in the real world as opposed to fantasy/paranormal—with a strong voice and that tackles difficult issues in a realistic, sympathetic way; I’d love some new women’s fiction, again with a strong voice, and not necessarily a romantic story but with strong relationships of all kinds; in romance I’d love some contemporary and romantic suspense. I still love the paranormals but it’s getting very hard to find something fresh and I feel a bit overwhelmed with them all at this point. (NEW UPDATE December 2010)

Elaine Spencer: It seems like the Writers Digest “Hot List” queries have finally subsided. If you submitted one and I didn't get to it, please resend according to the guidelines! I'm not changing what I was looking for last month, but I'm going to add to it a bit: high concept romantic suspense, something beyond the typical serial killer on the loose story, great historical romance or historical fiction, (for me, this means pre-1900s), and strong boy-protagonist young adult or middle grade stories, something with a great voice and strong writing, and any compelling women’s fiction, particularly witty commercial stories about women facing life in their mid to late twenties. Also, I would really REALLY love to add a great Harlequin presents author to my line up. I absolutely love the luxe and drama associated with those books. (NEW UPDATE December 2010)

Deidre Knight: I recently had the pleasure of reading David Cristofano’s sequel to THE GIRL SHE USED TO BE (in manuscript form, so don’t rush to the bookstore *just* yet). When I first read his work a few years back, it literally cast a spell over me. So, as you can imagine, his sophomore effort had big shoes to fill. It did not disappoint. The sequel transported me back to that exact same magical spot, and I fell in love all over again.

So, what am I looking for? More authors like David is the simple answer. The long answer: adept storytellers who have the ability to write accessibly, coupled with a heightened awareness of lyricism and the know-how to navigate thought-provoking themes. I want to read a submission where I literally can’t turn out the light and go to bed. Something that weaves a hypnotic spell over me with its strong sense of characterization, mood, suspense and compelling plotting. (Last Update November 2010)

Melissa Jeglinski: I am currently looking for middle grade (all types), young adult (contemporary or historical but no paranormal), women's fiction (would love to see a real weeper or a multi generational novel), romance (contemporary with a more serious twist, no paranormal at this time), inspirational (contemporary or historical but no non-fiction), mysteries (historical or a cozy series with a cute premise) and category romance. (Last Update October 2010)

Pamela Harty: I am always looking for romance, but in particular romantic suspense and contemporary. I am also interested in women’s commercial fiction. I love my YA authors and would love to see more of this genre. Additionally, I haven’t had many nonfiction queries lately and would like to see more including parenting, self help, motivation and health. (Last Update October 2010)

Lucienne Diver: I’m looking for a story that blows me away with characters I truly care about in any of the genres I represent: fantasy, romance, mystery/suspense, young adult…. That said, I have a very full list right now, so I’ll have to be really impressed! (Last Update October 2010)

Off the Record with Melissa

Melissa

Melissa Jeglinski attended a cooking class at the Chateau Elan winery in Braselton, Ga., and now she's hooked! The three-course dinner included a chicken and pine nut stuffed puff pastry appetizer and a rolled flank steak with chilli sauce entree. Dessert was baked goat cheese with raspberry sauce. Students ate each course as it was prepared and enjoyed a wide selection of exclusive Chateau Elan wines. Could we be looking at the next Top Chef, perhaps?
