In celebration of The Knight Agency reaching the momentous landmark of our 20th Anniversary last year, we are holding another Twitter pitchfest!

#TKA20 will be an all-day event, offering you an opportunity to tweet your pitches directly to the TKA agent team! We’ll be taking pitches from 9:00 AM EDT until 5:00 PM EDT Wednesday, April 5. The rules are listed below. We can’t wait to see you there!


Guidelines and Rules for #TKA20

1: #TKA20 pitch fest will be held from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time.

2: Please direct your tweet to our hashtag of #TKA20 at large, rather than to specific agents. Agents will “like” pitches of material they want to receive.

3: Once an agent or agents like your pitch, please send the first three chapters by attachment in Word to any time after 5:00 PM EDT. In the subject line of your email, please include the phrase “#TKA20” along with the names of the agent or agents who liked your pitch—for example, #TKA20—Deidre Knight, Elaine Spencer. (If more than one agent liked your pitch, include both names).

4: Please include the original #TKA20 pitch and your query in the body of the email, and again, please attach the first three chapters of your manuscript in Word.

5: Which agents will be participating? Here’s the exciting lineup: Deidre Knight, Pamela Harty, Elaine Spencer, Melissa Jeglinski, Travis Pennington, Nephele Tempest, Kristy Hunter, and Janna Bonikowski.

6: Genres we are most excited to see include: women’s fiction, historical fiction, YA, MG, romance of all subgenres, LGBT fiction and m/m romance, thrillers, mysteries, suspense, nonfiction, and fantasy. For a more detailed list of what we’re looking for, please check the agency’s About Us page.

7: Agents may share their particular wishlist items in advance of April 5, but all #TKA20 pitches should be directed generally and on the day of the event.

8: If you send out a pitch and no agent likes it, you may retweet it periodically—although we suggest wording it somewhat differently if your first pitch did not catch our attention. However, please do not tweet your pitch more than five times throughout the course of the event. 9: Although genre hashtags are not necessary, you may use them if you’d like. Here are some choices:

What Our Agents Are Looking for at #TKA20


Deidre Knight:


– LGBT or MM

– Thrillers

– Women’s fiction

– Memoirs about unique narrative experiences, told with vibrant, unique voices

– Business books/self help etc

– Romance – historical and contemporary. Love enemies to lovers trope and beauty and beast

– YA with realistic themes, and not just “downer” type. I want to see some uplifting and affirming YA, true-life type stories too. Ditto with the women’s fiction side.


Pamela Harty:


– I’m looking for contemporary, romantic suspense, cozy mysteries, and regency romance.
– For nonfiction: business, health, diet, relationship, and self help.
– No YA, NA, or MG

Elaine Spencer:


– Historical Women’s Fiction with a protagonist that changes the way the event unfolds or the way people respond to the event – would like to see underexplored historical figures or geographies from well-known events.
– Family-focused stories. I LIKED MY LIFE or THIS IS HOW IT ALWAYS IS. Women’s fiction or commercial fiction. Stories that focus on family dynamics under extreme stresses. I particularly enjoy when the characters don’t take themselves too seriously all the time.
– Funny, sexy contemporary romance. Underexplored professions or city settings.
– Light-hearted, commercial women’s fiction, reminiscent of the chic lit phase of publishing
– Heroes who are curmudgeonly – mind you, I didn’t say heroes that are a-holes
– I would love to see a unique wedding-themed women’s fiction or romance. The heroine need-not be the bride (at least in the beginning)
– Would love to see some great work-place romance
– In women’s fiction I’m always interested in stories centered around a shared theme, hobby, club, passion, etc. Stories where unlikely people are bonded by a shared interest.
– I would love to see an airline romance – set in airports, or with crew romances, or the like

Nephele Tempest:

– Contemporary romance set in cities we haven’t seen as much.
– A bad-boy book — heroes of dubious moral character in any of the sub-genres, such as pirates, spies, corporate raiders, etc.
– SFF that shows us the lead up to a dystopia — how did it happen/develop? Also SF that’s space adjacent but set on earth, in the vein of The Arrival, thought provoking/mind-bending
– Big women’s fiction. Strong hook and vibrant characters, no illness or divorce recovery — lighter material, sibling relationships, family dynamics
– YA that’s off the beaten path — different voices/cultures/backgrounds/experiences.

Kristy Hunter:

– Women’s fiction
– Mystery/thriller
– Historical fiction
– Romance
– Young adult
– Middle grade
I’d love to find a project that features sibling relationships and/or a strong sense of place. My favorite projects are those that leave me looking at the world through a different lens and feature authentic characters with strong voices.

Travis Pennington:

– Historical Fiction set in periods that haven’t been written about too much. Otherwise, the concept would really have to be amazing.
– Suspense (Voice is key for me in this genre. I don’t often make it past the first page of thriller/suspense submissions because they all read alike).
– Emotional books about dogs (I’ve always loved llamas, too. So please send me that llama manuscript stashed under your bed that you thought no one would ever want to read)
– Middle Grade of all types except high fantasy
– Unique horror (I’d be more likely to consider paranormal if it deals with a legend or superstition from another culture that hasn’t been widely explored. For American horror, I’d be more likely to consider something more down to earth, like MISERY or SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.
– I’m always open to Contemporary YA, but my list is getting full in this area. I’d love to find a high concept YA, though–something with big stakes that will affect many people if the hero fails

Janna Bonikowski:

– Romance of all types
– Women’s fiction
– Cozy mystery
– Suspense
– Historical fiction
– Contemporary young adult or middle grade
Bold, take-charge women are my favorite characters, and I loves stories that evoke strong emotion, whether laughter or tears
