AUTHOR TIP OF THE MONTH

Vaishnavi Patel is a law student living on the East Coast whose heart remains in the Midwest. When she's not studying or writing, she likes to find new places to drink hot chocolate and read.
KAIKEYI is her debut novel.

Kaikeyi-A-Novel-0

My main tip to aspiring authors is to keep practicing. I of course agree with all the other advice out there—don’t give up, find your community, do your research, etc. But I also know that there's a lot of luck involved at every stage, and I don't take my good luck for granted. When some amount of your success depends on being in the right place at the right time, l find it helpful to focus on the one thing I CAN control: my writing.

I personally don't find it productive to write every day, but I do try to either read or write every day. Reading is a form of practicing your craft, especially when done with a critical eye toward what you like or don't like within your genre. And even writing doesn't have to be with an end goal of publication; some of the best learning experiences for me have been those where I practiced weak areas of my craft without the pressure of trying to produce something shareable. Ultimately, focusing on improving my writing allowed me to make internal forward progress, even at times when I felt externally stalled.

So begins Kaikeyi’s story. The only daughter of the kingdom of Kekaya, she is raised on tales of the gods: how they churned the vast ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality, how they vanquish evil and ensure the land of Bharat prospers, and how they offer powerful boons to the devout and the wise. Yet she watches as her father unceremoniously banishes her mother, listens as her own worth is reduced to how great a marriage alliance she can secure. And when she calls upon the gods for help, they never seem to hear.
