Experience has taught me that aside from writing the best book possible, the number one thing new or aspiring authors can do to support their careers is invest time and energy into building a writing community. This doesn’t just mean networking and attempting to accrue as many contacts as possible—although networking opportunities can support the process. It’s about establishing meaningful, authentic relationships among other like-minded writers and book folks.

When you find your people, you create the foundation to support you through every career high and low. They’ll cheer you on while you draft, spread the word during book launch, and generally smooth over the rough, lonely parts of the writing life. Not to mention the best industry conversations are the ones happening privately among other authors! My writing group—find us at The (Writing) Group Chat on Substack—kept me motivated while I queried my debut and was with me every step as I wrote my latest release, Trust Me On This. Could I do it without them? Maybe, but nowhere near as well.
