AUTHOR TIP OF THE MONTH

Sara Ackerman is the author of THE CODEBREAKER'S SECRET, a dazzling story of love and intrigue set during America’s darkest hour.

The-Codebreakers-Secret-A-WWII-Novel-0

Writers unBlock. Always start the next scene before you stop writing for the day. This is one of my favorites. It makes it light years easier to start off running. I never close my laptop at the end of a scene. While your mind is still in the flow, spend a few extra minutes deciding where the next scene begins. Even if it’s just one line, get it down. You can always change it later. The few times I haven’t done this, I end up staring at my screen for long periods of time, unsure of what to write and feeling like I might be coming down with a bad case of writer’s block.

Word Count Wonder. Stick to a daily word count. For me, it’s 750 words a day, at least six days a week (with a very occasional long weekend off). That way, I know I can do close to 20,000 a month for my first draft. Some people can write much more, some less. Figure out what works for you. I often have to split up my writing, doing half in the morning and half in the afternoon. After three or four hundred words, my attention often starts fading, and I like to stay fresh. So I stop and then pick up later on. In Scrivener, make sure to use Show Project Targets. It is an absolute life saver!

Faithful Writing. Trust the process. I often feel like I have no idea what is going to happen next in my WIP.  How am I going to make this story interesting? How will I get from point A to point F? I spend a lot of time daydreaming and trying to figure plot lines out in my head, but I also try to let go and trust that the story will write itself if I get out of the way. When you put your butt in the chair, things begin to happen, one scene leads to another, and before you know it, there is a new character, a new idea, a new direction. This is not stuff you can think up or plan for, this is stuff that evolves only as the story progresses. This is the magic.
