Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls. All efforts to make her produce “normal” stories failed. She's a New York Times bestselling author, and THE DEEPEST OF SECRETS is her latest novel.

If you want to be a successful author, you must be at your desk between 7:04 and 7:12 AM, while facing the rising sun and sitting on a copy of the current #1 bestseller. It helps if you can also cross your fingers, but if that impedes your typing, cross your toes instead.

We all recognize this as ridiculous advice. Yet it can be harder to dismiss it if the author of that current #1 bestseller says writing early in the morning is essential for tapping into creativity. And if a dozen other authors on social media agree, clearly you—night-time writer—are doing it wrong.

Writers love to talk process. I certainly do. But my process is what works for me right now. It’s constantly evolving, and I’d be lying if I said I even use the same one for every project. Writers reveal their process quirks to show that there’s no right way to do it. Twenty bestselling authors will have twenty processes.

When you hear writers talking about how they craft a book, feel free to test out the parts that interest you. Feel equally free—please!—to abandon them if they don’t work. Find the one that works for you and write. That’s the important part: just write.
