Liselle's Tip:

I’m a little bit character obsessed. While most of my stories begin with plot-based ideas, I spend a lot of my time deciding on which characters will fit best into those narratives. That being said, creating an experience in which the person on the page feels real is a constant challenge, and one that I enjoy tackling whenever I dive into a book. Whether you, like me, love character work or whether you’re just looking to improve, these are a couple of my tips for creating fleshed out and believable characters.

Take the time to explore the full journey of the character, not just where they’ll be at the start of the story, but who they’ll be in the middle, and at the end. I find that having some notion of their trajectory can help in not only knowing what the character is seeking, but also how they’ll react based on their state of mind during multiple stages in the book. Likely, they’re going to evolve as readers follow them on their journey and having an understanding of that can help in bringing them to life.

I also really encourage trying to sink into the character and see the world from their eyes. Sometimes it can be helpful to think of multiple characters observing the same scene. What are the things that each one notices or doesn’t notice? How do they react? I find that this not only helps me get better acquainted with my characters, it also helps in keeping them distinct from other characters. If they’re all reacting the same way (assuming there isn’t a book reason why that will be explored later, like they’re all secret clones!) then there is a risk of each character seeming flat. Real people may have similar responses, but they still have slight differences separating them. Homing in on these details is a great way to bring realism to your characters.

There are many other tips and tricks for creating meaningful characters, but I hope these couple will help spark something. And maybe soon enough you’ll find that you’re character obsessed too!
