AUTHOR TIP OF THE MONTH

Global leadership speaker Fawn Germer is the Oprah-featured, best-selling author of six books, including COMING BACK.

Coming-Back-How-to-Win-the-Job-You-Want-When-Youve-Lost-the-Job-You-Need-0

I kept hearing from very respected professionals in my network who were being cast aside or pushed out at work. Those who lost their jobs couldn't get hired, or if they finally did, it was for way less than they had been earning. It was so discouraging and I was sure it was age discrimination.

I figured that was a good book topic, but as I interviewed more than 300 CEOs, senior executives, workplace consultants, lawyers, academics and professionals, I found a very different explanation. Yes, age discrimination is rampant, but that is because leaders assume older people haven't kept up with the crazy pace of technology and aren't driving change into the future. That is largely true. You can't justify one of the highest paychecks in the office if you are delivering less than a new hire who does three times as much for a third the cost. Companies don't care if you are the best person for the job today. They want to know if you are going to be the best person five years down the runway. So my book changed, showing how we have to constantly make ourselves relevant to protect and advance our careers.

It was really fun for me as a journalist because I asked questions and got answers I never expected. The answers will impact many, many careers, and that is very rewarding.

This is my ninth book. My first career was as an investigative reporter, so it was only natural that I would write nonfiction. All of my books are very different, although I have done more women's leadership than anything. Coming Back! is for men and women. I just find a topic that interests me and do a deep dive into it. I love this kind of work because, as an author, I decide what I want to look at and how I want to go about it. Back in newspapers, there was a lot more direction.

So, for aspiring nonfiction authors, I'd say to view your writing as a conversation with the reader. Your goal is to get the reader from the first sentence to the last. It's not about writing something that makes you sound smart. It's about communicating your point. And I'll share this advice I got from a colleague many, many years ago. "The truth is one more call away." That made me a better reporter, but as an author, it is a reminder to keep digging – even when you think you are done. The best stuff always comes at the end.
