Cait Nary lives in Virginia with her husband and a very anxious German Shepherd, neither of whom gives her too much grief when her writing alarm goes off at 5:30am. If she isn't writing romances, trying out a new muffin recipe, or running on a trail somewhere, she is probably shouting at the Philadelphia Flyers. SEASON'S CHANGE is her debut novel.

Writing Tips from my High School Track Coach

All writers have days where we’re tired, unmotivated, uninspired, and uninterested. We also all have to learn how to push through that if we hope to do things like “finish writing a manuscript, ever,” which is a comparatively recent accomplishment for me. Several years ago, I had to have a sit-down conversation with myself about how I had barely finished writing a short story since 2011, and how this pattern was incompatible with my professed goal of finishing my first novel manuscript before I turned 29 30 31.

Definitely 31 32.

I decided I was going to start writing every day, because that’s what I had done during my most consistent stretch of adult-era writing. (NB: This works for me. It’s not the One Right Way.) You can do anything for 20 15 10 minutes, I told myself, which is exactly what I would say to myself while dragging my unwilling body through a run during marathon training.

Finally, my lightbulb.

Since then, I’ve realized that all the writing pep talks that I give myself are the same messages I saw on posters stuck to the wall of my high school coach’s office: trust the process! Put in the work! You will never always be motivated; you must learn to be disciplined! Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity! And, more writing-specific than running-specific, but consistent with the ethos of my coach: inspiration had better find you working.

Through repeating those little sticky-note mantras to myself every day, I’ve been able to remind myself that I can follow through on a commitment that I made to myself; that I can hold space in my schedule and my spirit for a sustained creative practice, even if it’s snatched on lunch breaks and the silent time before my household is awake. Writing still feels impossible sometimes, but I’ve learned that I love it even more because of the transcendent joy of a flow state after two weeks of slogging it out one Pomodoro block at a time. I have learned that I can trust myself to do hard things, to follow through, if I keep showing up to do the work. Keep focusing on the practice, just like my old coach always said.
