Damyanti's Tip:

When I first started writing, I created from a place of absolute terror of reader reactions. With very good reason, as with most beginners.

Over the years, I’ve begun to feel less of that terror, having understood the value of writing for myself. If I hate it, so will my reader. If I’m moved to tears, that will translate into reader experience. My joy in writing a scene will seep through the page.

At the same time though, I value a different kind of fear. I’ve noticed that writing into what I’m afraid to confront and pushing into discomfort often notches up the intensity of the work I create.

So my writing tip would be to write into your discomfort. Write about topics that you’d rather stay away from. Dig in places where you’re inclined not to dig too deep. About incidents or characters that deepen your unease. Go write the one thing you’re most afraid of writing. At first, these could be experimental forays that no one needs to see, but if you persist, new and wondrous things begin to happen.

It is in pushing those boundaries that a writer can stay relevant to themselves and to their readers—avoid writing cookie cutter stories that become repetitive and boring. Taking risks into the unknown, into a zone of discomfort and fear, will lead you into adventure, revelations, and wonder. It will keep your readers riveted in the anticipation of what you’ll do next. And most important of all, it will keep you addicted to this deranged business we call writing.
