Lucienne Diver
That’s so hard to say, because on the one hand, I want to say I light up at a really new, high-concept idea. For example, I’m looking around for what to read next and see The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix, about the survivors of various horror film–type massacres who’ve formed a support group and have to band together using the skills they’ve honed; then one of their number goes missing. I think “This!” So different! But on the other hand, a few months ago, I saw Lucy Foley’s The Guest List and all I had to know was that it involved murder at a wedding on an Irish Island for me to say, “I’m in!” The elements weren’t entirely new, but the way it was developed was so wonderful, I binged it straight to the end. No matter what, the trick for me is a submission that attacks something from a new angle with a distinct voice. I’m also a sucker for atmospheric settings. (Note: these were not submissions, but books I instantly added to my tottering TBR pile!) |
