AUTHOR TIP OF THE MONTH #1

Sally Blakely studied theatre, media arts, English, and education at The University of Montana. When she's not writing, she's reading, or making far too many playlists. She lives in Montana with her husband. FRIENDS TO LOVERS is her first novel.

Sometimes it can be so tough to get back into the flow of writing. There are certainly days where you have to just sit down and write anyway--there are deadlines to contend with, after all! But on days when even forcing your way through feels near impossible, I recommend keeping a project that is only for you on hand. It could be something novel-length, a document where you dump all of those great ideas that come to you in the middle of the night, even a project that might eventually make its way out of the "this will never see the light of day" folder on your computer, but for now is for your eyes only. Whatever shape it takes, it should be something you can turn to when you're feeling stuck. If all you ever do is play in this project, without any outside voices in your head, it can give you that jump start flexing the writing muscle. Give yourself twenty or thirty minutes to work on that story, and by the end of it the drafting or revisions you need to be working on might come a bit easier.

I've also found this to be a great way to come back to the joy of writing on those hard days. There will always be magical moments with whatever you're working on, but having something on hand that never needs to be finished, that brings back a little bit of the younger writer in you that didn't care as much about convention or structure can be so helpful when you're feeling discouraged. The work of writing is wonderful, but it's also tough. It's nice to have something to return to that you can get a little lost in when you're struggling to do so in your current project.
