AUTHOR TIP OF THE MONTH

Award-winning author Beth Cornelison worked in public relations until she moved with her husband to Louisiana, where she decided to pursue her love of writing fiction. Since that time, she has published numerous romantic suspense books with Harlequin. COLTON’S DEADLY EVIDENCE is her latest novel.

Beth's Tip:

Charles Schultz once told a fellow cartoonist that his Peanuts comic strip only had modest popularity until he had Snoopy stand up and have a thought. His readers loved the added spark of having wry, sweet Snoopy with his wild imagination and best friend Woodstock. Peanuts became wildly popular after Snoopy, with ideas and clever commentary, became an integral feature. Schultz encouraged the budding cartoonist to find his own “talking Snoopy” and nurture it.

I first heard this story as a new writer, and the advice resonated with me. By now you’ve probably heard the advice not to chase a trend. I concur. The key to lasting success, the way to make your work shine, is to find your Snoopy and have Snoopy stand up and have a thought. In other words, find that unique spark that is your voice, your strength, your heart, and fill your writing with whatever flavor is truly YOU. Don’t copy others or chase trends. My best advice to new writers is to write from the heart and hone your own personal style.
