AUTHOR TIP OF THE MONTH

Nekesa Afia is lives in Canada. When she's not writing, she's sewing, swing dancing, or trying to pet every dog she sees. HARLEM SUNSET is the second book in the Harlem Renaissance Mystery series.

lg3-

My tip is to not write sometimes. Taking time to read, watch TV, to go outside and touch grass is just as necessary as time at the keyboard. If you’re always forcing yourself to write, you will burn out so fast and then you won’t be able to do it at all.

Writing is hard. The brain is working overtime to make your story make sense. I tend to hyperfocus, and can never actually step away. My thoughts are always running a marathon, even when I’m at ballet class. Then add in social media and doom scrolling and I always have to force myself into taking a break.

Days off and away from the screen are just as important to your creativity and mental health as days on.
