- TKA superstars Elaine Spencer, Pamela Harty, and Tibby Armstrong met with clients, prospective authors, and editors at this year's RWA Convention in Orlando.

Tibby Armstrong has been a romance reader since the age of eleven, when she snuck a very bad historical from her aunt’s shelves. In her late twenties, she fell in love with paranormal romance and urban fantasy. Now she writes contemporary and paranormal stories with strong relationship threads and a healthy helping of steam.

Her latest novel is SURRENDER THE DARK, the first book in The Dark Series.

TKA: Please share a bit about SURRENDER THE DARK and how it came about.

Tibby: SURRENDER THE DARK tells the story of Benjamin, Boston’s last vampire hunter, and Tzadkiel, the vampire king who blinded him as a boy. The two men, twenty years later, are mortal enemies, but must work together to save Boston from a powerful witches’ coven that is intent on draining the city of its magic.

The story came to me one winter evening as I attempted to navigate icy sidewalks at a non-ADA compliant crosswalk in a Boston suburb. As I wondered how someone without their sight would be able to safely cross the icy four-lane road, I happened to look up at a Gothic building’s urns and gargoyles. “That’d be a great place for a vampire to crouch in wait for his prey,” I remember thinking. The two thoughts collided, and the story’s premise—blind vampire hunter, hunted by his nemesis—was born.

TKA: Were you at all hesitant to write about vampires with so many other vampire books available? What made you see it through and how did it feel when Loveswept offered to publish the entire series?

Tibby: I’ve always written what I want to read, so it never occurred to me not to write a vampire novel. It did help, I think, that vampires aren’t as pervasive in LGBT Romance. Also, I made a conscious effort to turn a few tropes on their heads. For instance, the concept I started with was that vampires are like dragons in that they collect or hoard wealth over their long lives. Mortal hunters, over millennia, greedily preyed on the vampires for these hoards until vampires have nearly become extinct.

There never was a time when I thought I might not finish this book. It sunk its teeth into me (pun intended) and wouldn’t let go for over three years. So, when Loveswept offered to publish the series, I was ecstatic. My editor, Shauna Summers, is my dream editor. To have both her and Deidre Knight in my corner is a literal dream come true.

TKA: Did you face any particular struggles when writing SURRENDER THE DARK?

Tibby: Probably this has been the most difficult novel I’ve written, because I didn’t want to bend to convention. Forcing myself to come up with reasons why vampires drink blood (beyond hunger), for instance, was one of many ways I needed to think outside the so-called coffin.

For instance, vampires’ strength and power comes from magic, and blood carries particularly potent magic. They eat food to nourish their bodies, and drink blood to fortify their magic. This was one of many small details I tried to work out rather than reach for the obvious. I think it resulted in a richer world and in a better experience for me as a writer.

I also researched Greek history to come up with a creation story for both the vampires and the hunters. The desire at first was to present all of this information in the book. It’s safe to say that I have about three hundred pages that ended up on the cutting room floor!

TKA: Do you have any rituals to get you in the mood for writing? How do you stay motivated on days when you feel like doing something else?

Tibby: Writing, for me, is an escape and an entertainment. I watch very little television and don’t read as much as I used to—there just aren’t enough hours in the day. If I want to have fun, I tell myself a story. Some days it’s easier than others, and during those times I give myself permission to sit down and write only a few hundred words. Usually, by the time I finish those two hundred, I am immersed and keep going. If not? Well, I close my laptop for the day and almost always have a more productive session the next time I sit down to write.

My rituals generally involve my favorite chair in my preferred coffee shop and a playlist that immerses me in the world quickly.

TKA: TASTE THE DARK is set to release next May. What can we expect from this second book in the series?

Tibby: The blurb says it best!

When something’s worth dying for, one taste is never enough. After a lost soul crosses over, a vampire prince becomes the mentor he needs—and the lover he’s always craved.

Half-human and half-vampire, Akito James just wants to be a hero. But after taking a little initiative in the fight against a dangerous coven, he’s banished for his troubles—and not even his best friends will stand up for him. Tormented by the voices in his head, Akito throws himself into Boston’s Charles River. He awakens to a solitary vigil held by a specter only he can see: a tall, dark, and leather-clad vampire who gives Akito a warm welcome to the shadow realm.

In a city this old, even the dead must be careful at night. No one knows that better than Lyandros Dragoumanos, brother of the War King, doomed to wander the streets of Boston unseen, unheard, and alone—until a spark passes between him and a troubled stranger with shimmering eyes and inky black hair. After witnessing the young man’s suicide, Lyandros seizes a tantalizing opportunity. Akito may just hold the key to his salvation—and his touch promises untold pleasures.

Especially when it comes to genre fiction, have fun with your writing. All authors want to sell well—that’s a given. In this unpredictable market, however, it’s not always easy to determine what will make a bestseller. As readers, we all look for something new and fresh amid the familiar and comforting. If you tell a well-crafted story that you want to hear, you have at least one fan in yourself. Chances are, many others will follow!

Manuscript Wish Lists

Pamela Harty

I am looking for contemporary and historical women's fiction, both complex and character-driven. In romance, I'm looking for high-concept contemporary and historical, particularly Regency or Victorian with a gothic feel. I would also love to add another cozy mystery author.

In nonfiction, I am on the lookout for business, health and diet, and relationship. Platform is always key and needs to be established. Most important, I am looking! Please send!

Lucienne Diver

I have a very full list right now, but will never be closed to a novel that blows me away and shows me something new, perhaps a brand-new world or storyline, particularly one that expands our thinking. I love novels with substance and suspense.

Nephele Tempest

I’m currently looking for women’s fiction with a really romantic love story at the heart of it. Something upbeat, with an intriguing story to go around the romance as well, but that warms my heart and only makes me cry happy tears if I cry at all.

Unsurprisingly, I’d also love some really heartfelt contemporary romance with great tension between the couple, maybe in an unusual setting or against a backdrop of a crazy career.

Melissa Jeglinski

I'm currently looking for the following:

Cozy Mystery: set around The Great British Baking Show.

Women’s Fiction: Protagonist making a go at a new career that gets picked up as a reality TV show for something like PBS.

Women’s Fiction: Inspired by Lea Remini's A&E documentary about Scientology and a female protagonist who has left a cult.

Middle Grade: main characters who come across modern pirates or find a pirate map, or even time-travel to be with real pirates.

Fiction: Multi-generational family saga.  A 100k hefty book with a female-centric plot.

Historical Fiction: American Homefront during WWI or WWII.

Historical Fiction: The Great Depression saga with a rags-to-riches slant.  Would love to see something featuring the Dust Bowl.

Kristy Hunter

I'm actively growing my list. I love voice-driven stories, strong characters, and being surprised by the unexpected. As a result, I am open to most genres but I'm specifically looking for strong women’s fiction with book-club appeal, literary fiction, historical fiction, romance (and all subgenres of romance), suspense, young adult, and middle grade.

Books that feature a diverse cast of characters are always at the top of my list, and I’d love to see even more #ownvoices projects in my inbox. Some of my favorite reads include Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman, The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han, The Hating Game by Sally Thorne, The Swans of Fifth Avenue by Melanie Benjamin, and The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin.
