My writing tip is to cultivate a group of beta readers whose advice you trust. Choose people who are well read and whose taste in books matches with the one you are writing. Choose people who will give you unvarnished truth. Choose people who want to see you succeed.

Of course, you will read your book a lot. And so will your editor. But beta readers help bring a fresh perspective that can assist you across your publishing journey. They can help shape your submission, making sure you're putting your best foot forward. They can help you work through your edited manuscript, serving as a sounding board if you are not aligned with a proposed edit from your publisher.

But they can also help you in other ways. They are people you can turn to when you're having a bad day and remind you that what you are writing is important. They can help you position and market your book, telling you what they thought the story was about and serving as early reviewers and promoters.

Businesses use betas to ensure that what they bring to market is set up for maximum success. Why not adopt this same approach for your book?
