Interview with Anne Marsh
| | | | |
Anne Marsh is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than thirty romances. She loves stories about tough guys with marshmallow interiors, protective alphas, and men who live for the women they love. Her latest novel is ROYALLY HUNG. TKA: Please tell us a bit about your new novel ROYALLY HUNG. Anne: I love, love, love royal weddings and I’ve always had a major weak spot for the ever-naughty Prince Harry—so I wasn’t quite ready to let him ride off into the marital sunset with Meghan. Instead, I imagined a faraway country, made my hero a red-headed Prince Dare, and told him he’d just received a royal command to marry ASAP. Dare being Dare, he doesn’t take orders well. He’s also got quite the dirty mouth on him and he’s never afraid to say what he’s thinking. He picks out the most inappropriate, gloriously fun bride ever—and ROYALLY HUNG was born. TKA: If you could be one of the characters from ROYALLY HUNG for a day, who would you choose and why? Anne: Edee! Prince Dare and Edee Jones have a Vegas quickie wedding, complete with Elvis impersonator… but I’d love to fast-forward and write them a royal vow renewal. I think Edee deserves a big, fairytale wedding a la Meghan Markle, don’t you? TKA: Humor obviously plays a big role in ROYALLY HUNG. What advice can you offer writers who struggle with wittiness in their prose? Anne: : I’m always vaguely panicked that people think I’m funny because in real life (no matter how much I love to laugh) I’m always the last person in a group to get a joke. I’m also one of those people who think of the perfect response or comeback about four hours after a conversation actually occurs. Fortunately, that’s not a liability when it comes to writing. Honestly, though, I think the trick is to just write what you’re thinking and go filter-less. Most of us walk around making little mental observations and word plays—so you just have to let those out of your head and onto the page.

TKA: What is the very last book you read and really loved? Anne: Joanna Wylde’s Rome's Chance. Wylde writes colorful tough bikers with the most glorious marshmallow insides, plus her heroines are totally relatable. They’re not CEOs or executives or anything other than strong women earning minimum wage and trying their best even when life serves them a smackdown. Rome is big, he’s tough, and he’s jumping all over a second chance with Randi, so I was totally hooked. I think I read it four times the week it was released. TKA: What are you working on now, and when can your readers expect it? Anne: I’m finishing BAD WOLF, the last book in my Breed MC series—think bad boy bikers with Cajun accents who can go furry and shift into werewolves. They give Prince Dare a run for his money in the dirty category. It will be out in June. Anne Marsh’s Author Tip of the Month: Add plenty of nonfiction to your reading diet. The books I’ve written that have had the strongest response with readers—and that I’ve been the most passionate about too—have sprung from a non-fiction book I’d read that had details that fascinated me. For example, I’ve read books on lavender farming, hotshot firefighting, tattooing, and maple sugar farming—all of which have made it into my books or WIPs. There’s something really satisfying about being able to explore a whole new world in a fiction book, both as an author and a reader, and it's a great way to make your books stand out.
