Write what’s true to you and write what excites you!

Of course, writing what is true to you might look different depending on your genre—and it doesn’t have to be autobiographical or an exact detail of truth—but overall, authenticity in your story will help you to write it and the reader to connect with it. It could be in the characters, the relationships, the setting, the themes…. There are so many places where we can find the heart of a writer in a story, and when we as readers are able to connect with that, it’s so magical!

In terms of writing what excites you: I think so often we might find ourselves thinking things like ‘I just need to finish this chapter so I can get to the more fun section next.’ I think it’s a bit silly to approach things that way for a couple of reasons. First, you’re taking the fun out of your creative process this way. Second, your readers will absolutely feel the same way about the chapter. When we’re passionate and excited about something we’re writing, the characters are livelier, the pacing is more natural and easier to read, and the story doesn’t feel like a chore to get through for the reader. If you’re not loving a section, try to find a way to rewrite it so that you do love it!
