Springs-Arcana-The-Dead-Gods-Heart-Book-1-0

I like to set a timer for five or ten minutes—any timer, a cheap kitchen one will do. No day is so busy I don’t have five minutes to write. And if it’s only five minutes, fine, that’s five more minutes spent on the book than I had before. Of course, if I have longer, that’s great; the initial few short minutes help “prime the pump” and make it easier for me to slide into the rest of the work.

When you start getting tired or discouraged, do not look back. Forge onward, and finish the damn story. Obsessively reworking the beginning or getting bogged down in the soggy middle is often pure avoidance—never finishing saves one from getting feedback that might dent one’s frail ego, but is hardly conducive to one’s career. One can fix bad writing; one cannot fix a blank page. Keep the revising for after the book/story/poem is done.

Ideas are cheap, they’re everywhere. It’s the discipline to keep going and finish that’s expensive and must be practiced. Finishing one’s works is a skill, and like any skill it can be practiced. Keep going.
