Voice-y Verbs

Every single word that goes into your manuscript is an opportunity to showcase your voice and add depth to characters. For example, the main character in my cozy mystery series is a young winery owner, so I’m always looking for hipper, more wine-focused ways to say something. Her cheeks don’t just flush, they turn rosé red!

And, in my humble opinion, no word has a bigger impact on voice than verbs. In fact, pay attention when you’re reading across genres and you’ll notice that shifts in tone are in large part thanks to these grammatical linchpins. Take literary novels: the action tends to be more passive and internal, whereas genres like mystery sway more toward the immediate and external.

So, the next time you catch yourself typing that a character simply walked somewhere, think about a way to make it more specific—more voice-y. Sure, occasionally the simplicity of walked works great, but other times, spice it up. Is it closer to a saunter, sashay, or stride, or maybe something maudlin like a defeated shuffle? Because every word really is an opportunity.

Deidre Knight

My most recent read, which is the exact sort of book I want to find, is THE BROMANCE BOOK CLUB. It's filled with humor, heart and is a sports romance. I'm also eagerly seeking LGBTQ fiction and nonfiction, both YA and adult, in all genres. Recent favorite queer YA reads are RED, WHITE AND ROYAL BLUE and AUTOBOYOGRAPHY. Always a great fan of enemies-to-lovers romance and secret/forbidden romance. If there are both? I’m all in!

Pamela Harty
I’m looking for rom-com, cozy mysteries, and historical fiction. For non-fiction, I'd like health and wellness, advice and relationship, and true crime.

Elaine Spencer

I’m looking for historical fiction focused on lesser-known women who made big waves with lasting impacts in their relationships and circles. I also loved fictionalized accounts of very specific moments in history. Fiona Davis, Chanel Cleeton, and Ariel Lawhon are all wonderful examples of this type of storytelling. I would also love to find new diverse, millennial voices in romance, women’s fiction and cozy mysteries. And I’m always open to platform-driven nonfiction content in a wide range of categories across the lifestyle, wellness, and business space.

Lucienne Diver

Most wanted for me: a novel that keeps me on the edge of my seat with characters I care about deeply. I enjoy fresh perspectives and surprising turns. I don’t want to feel as though I’ve heard it before or can anticipate where the novel is going before it even gets there.

My wish list right now includes high concept women’s fiction, rom-com/chick lit, YA fiction (open to all genres) and MG fiction (all genres). As always, I’m looking for fresh concepts and unique and/or underrepresented voices.
