AUTHOR TIP OF THE MONTH

Willa Reece is the author of WILDWOOD WHISPERS and the upcoming sequel, WILDWOOD MAGIC. She lives in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia.

Willa’s Tip:

More than anything else, my Wildwood books are about the power inherent in refilling the well. So many of us live a lifestyle of constant depletion—Produce! Diet! Hustle! Creatives need to consciously cultivate downtime that nurtures, fills, and inspires. Music, art, all manner of storytelling and nature are examples of things that fill me, and then, when the time is right, seem to flow through me onto the page.

Rest. Refill. Replenish. We need to allow ourselves to wonder at the world around us and to listen, even to wait, for the stories that wake when we aren't too busy to hear them.

The World We Make: A Novel (The Great Cities Book 2)

THE WORLD WE MAKE by N. K. Jemisin

AMAZON - B&N - BOOKSHOP

Four-time Hugo Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author N.K. Jemisin crafts a glorious tale of identity, resistance, magic and myth.

All is not well in the city that never sleeps. Even though the avatars of New York City have temporarily managed to stop the Woman in White from invading—and destroying the entire universe in the process—the mysterious capital "E" Enemy has more subtle powers at her disposal. A new candidate for mayor wielding the populist rhetoric of gentrification, xenophobia, and "law and order" may have what it takes to change the very nature of New York itself and take it down from the inside.

Death on a Deadline (A Homefront News Mystery Book 2)

DEATH ON A DEADLINE by Joyce St. Anthony

As World War II rages in Europe and the Pacific, the small town of Progress is doing its part for the soldiers in the field with a war bond drive at the annual county fair. Town gossip Ava Dempsey rumors that Clark Gable will be among the participating stars. Instead of Gable, the headliner is Freddie Harrison, a B-movie star. When Freddie turns up dead in the dunk tank, Irene Ingram, editor-in-chief of The Progress Herald, starts chasing the real headline.

There are plenty of suspects and little evidence. Ava’s sister Angel, who was married to the dead actor, is the most obvious. The couple had argued about his affair with the young starlet Belinda Fox, and Angel was the last person to see Freddie alive.

A journey of 15,000 kilometres - by rail, road, on foot and under sail - through about 50 Indonesian islands, shining a light on what has been described as the world's most invisible country.

From tracking tigers (and the mythical 'short man') in the Sumatra jungle to the mystical Dayak tribe that lives near the geographical centre of Borneo, this book touches on some of Indonesia's most intriguing secrets. The author meets Tana Toraja's 'living dead', the Bugis people (once known as the Bogeymen) who build and sail the spectacular Sulawesi schooners and the villagers who are literally besieged by dragons in the Komodo archipelago. He surfs the legendary reefs of G-Land, Nias and Occy's Left (and pioneers a previously un-surfed wave in the remote Alor Archipelago). He road-trips across Sulawesi and Flores and sails in the wake of Alfred Russel Wallace around Spice Islands, which have remained largely unchanged for centuries.

Sometimes, the real story isn't the beautiful city girl returning to her small town to save Christmas—it’s the townie chick who never left.

Jane Zielinski has her hands full this December, working three jobs and directing a homemade reality dating web series, Single Bells, as a stunt to keep her small town competitive with the ritzy resort towns luring tourists. Then the gorgeous Bella Bradley, Jane’s childhood BFF who had no qualms about skipping town when times got tough, returns with handfuls of cash and her smoking-hot business partner Nate Wright on her arm.
