Kerry's Tip

One of the most important things I ever did for my writing and my career was embracing the truth that I am a writer and that writers write. Writing is not a luxury or a pastime or a leisure activity. It’s not a guilty pleasure, something you do only after all of the so-called more important things on the To Do List get done.

If you are called to write, then you are a writer. There is no aspiring. You can aspire to be published or successful or whatever, but “aspiring writer” literally means that you are not a writer yet. Drop the qualifying adjective and embrace your identity. Practice in the mirror, if this is hard. Look into your own eyes and say, out loud, “This is what a writer looks like. I am a writer.” When you’ve mastered that, start saying it to family and friends and new acquaintances. When people ask what you do, tell them, “I’m a writer.” Resist the temptation to add the “but.” We all have way too many buts in our heads. But I don’t have an agent. But I’m not published. But nobody really reads my work. But I’ve never made a list. But you’ve probably never heard of me. None of the buts matter. You are a writer.

Once you own writer as your identity, the other pieces begin to fall into place on their own. You write consistently, because that is who you are and what you do. Because you’re a writer, you make time and space for writing in your life. You develop your voice and find your style and create better and better books, which leads to finding readers, which leads to writing more books. This one shift literally changed everything for me, and I believe it will for you, too.
