AUTHOR TIP OF THE MONTH

Gareth L. Powell is an award-winning British author of twenty-two books, including thirteen novels, with works translated into eleven languages. He has twice won the British Science Fiction Association Award for Best Novel and has been a finalist for the Locus, Seiun, British Fantasy, Canopus, Premio Italia, and Premios Ignotus awards. WHO WILL YOU SAVE by Gareth L. Powell

For the would-be novelist, life contains a billion social and biological distractions, but these don’t necessarily have to derail you. As long as some part of your imagination is still worrying away at your story, these periods away from the keyboard can actually be highly productive. Sometimes you need to step back and occupy your attention elsewhere in order to give your imagination time to come up with a way to fix your plot, or suggest a way to improve a scene or character.

Often, if I’m unhappy with some aspect of my story or unclear what the next scene will be, the solution will appear while I’m out walking, shopping, or driving. Getting out into the real world and distracting my conscious mind lets my subconscious chew over the problem and make unexpected connections. This means that when I do sit down at my desk, I don’t spend the first half hour wondering what to write. Instead, I’m excited and raring to incorporate this new idea into the story, which means I make better use of my actual writing time.
